The little birdie finally sings! Songbird reaches version 1.0!
It's finally happened! It's been a long journey, but the wait has paid off. Songbird, an open source music player based on Mozilla, has matured to version 1.0! What does this mean for you? Well, how about a great music player that keeps improving and adding new features? Songbird is essentially an open source "iTunes". Many of the features you may be used to in iTunes are now part of Songbird!
The long road to version 1.0
I admit, I tried Songbird over a year ago and found it to be very rough. It constantly crashed and had quite a few difficulties especially with add-ons. Simply put, it didn't deliver. I trashed it and moved on. Recently Songbird released version 1.0 so I chose to give it another chance. WOW! What a difference a year makes. Version 1.0 truly delivers!
Songbird is built on the same platform as the popular web browser Firefox. Given what I've seen, Songbird is poised to do for your music library what Firefox did for your web browsing. Like Firefox, Songbird is extensible. This means that users can customize the look and feel of Songbird as well as add exciting new features as they're developed. Songbird also prompts you to install Quicktime Playback so you can play the songs you've downloaded from the iTunes Store. This makes it easy for you to convert from using iTunes! Now you can "unshackle" yourself from iTunes...buy "non-DRMed" music from Amazon.com and feel the FREEDOM!
Hey! At least give Songbird a look. Check it out at the Songbird website. If you'd like to get a sneak peak, check out the slide show of screenshots below. These are from my recent installation of Songbird. I was truly impressed...I think you will be too.
